Abstract

Women in Kenya continue to face persistent social, economic, cultural, and institutional barriers that limit their participation in education, leadership, and socio-economic development despite significant progress toward gender equality. This paper aims to examine how psychological, educational, psychosocial, and structural pathways can transform these challenges into opportunities for women's empowerment in Kenya. Employing a qualitative conceptual approach, the study synthesizes scholarly literature, policy documents, and illustrative case examples, including initiatives such as Akili Dada, university mentorship programmes, and digital literacy interventions. The literature synthesis indicates that sustainable women's empowerment requires an integrated approach that combines psychological resilience, self-efficacy, inclusive education, psychosocial support, and enabling institutional and policy environments. The review further suggests that interventions focusing solely on individual capacity building or structural reform are insufficient; rather, coordinated strategies that integrate these complementary pathways are more likely to achieve lasting gender equity. The paper provides insights for educators, policy-makers, development practitioners, and researchers seeking to design holistic and contextually relevant interventions that advance women's empowerment in Kenya.
